A narrative  in three chapters with notes based on oral evidence relating to the Hawkhurst Gang and the attack on Goudhurst in 1747. 18th Century, written by T.H. Baker and dedicated to Edward Hayward 24 December 1847. Handwritten manuscript accompanied by a transcript, Goudhurst, Kent, 1847, 19th Century.

Object Name: Pistol

Description: Flintlock pistol barrel marked on top with an animal (Lion). Stock has a grotesque face upon it. Length 397 mm, bore 21 mm. The pistol is said to be one of a pair taken from Barnett Woollett and George Kingsmill from the Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers.  They were both killed at Goudhurst on the 21st of April 1747 when an attack on the town was defeated by the Goudhurst Band of Militia.  The pistols were donated with a dog-lock musket and papers and two letters relating to this: 2 Maidstone Journals, October 19th, 1847. 2 letters, T.H. Baker.

Object Name: Blunderbuss

Description: A dog-lock musket broken in two pieces, much damage by woodworm. Detached wooden fragments belong to this firearm. The blunderbuss is thought to have belonged to James (alias Trip) Stanford who was a leading Hawkhurst smuggler although he may not have taken part in the Goudhurst battle in 1747. The blunderbuss was donated with two flintlock pistols taken from the Hawkhurst gang of smugglers after their attack on  Goudhurst in 1747. Firearms, 18th Century.

Object Name: Letter

Description: A letter from T H Baker dated 18 October 1847 to Edward Hayward.  Thomas Henry Baker lived in Goudhurst and was involved in the acquisition of Jarvis Lambert's weapons by Edward Hayward when they were sold on the 14 of October 1847.  On the 18th of October Baker wrote to Hayward sending him a certificate signed by the late Jarvis Lambert's children (see 3.1.1) as well as reports of events following the sale together with unspecified proposals requiring further discussions between the two men.  The weapons had belonged to the Hawkhurst gang active in the 18th century.

Object Name: Letter

Description: A letter from T H Baker dated 30 October 1847 to Edward Hayward.  Thomas Henry Baker lived in Goudhurst and was involved in the acquisition of Jarvis Lambert's weapons by Edward Hayward when they were sold on the 14 of October 1847.  The letter dated the 30th of October 1847 is the second after the sale and in this Baker tries to explain the unfavourable article reporting the sale of the pistols and blunderbuss published in the Sussex Express (see 2.4 in 2014 research list. ).  He offers to be of further assistance to Mr Hayward.  The weapons concerned belonged to the Hawkhurst gang of smugglers and were taken from them after the attack on Goudhurst on 21st of April 1747. Baker may have been the author of the Maidstone Journal centenary article. Events relating 18th century, Letter 19th century.

An account sent to the the "Lords of his Majesty's Treasury" containing an outline of the events of the 21st of April 1747 when the Hawkhurst gang attacked Goudhurst, and claiming the advertised rewards for the capture of Kingsmill and Woollett for previous offences. The document is undated but the authentication document by Jarvis Lambert's children state that it was copied in 1747. 18th Century.
